With the warm summer-like weather we’ve had this spring, many gardeners have been busy preparing their gardens and starting to plant. From trees and shrubs to veggies, small fruit and even summer annuals, many have been eager to simply get gardening.
Although our general rule of thumb for when to plant tender annuals, perennials and vegetables is May 24th when the risk of frost has passed, there is plenty you can do to ensure your plants are not affected by frost if planted or purchased before then:
- For plants, containers or hanging baskets that are not yet planted, be sure to bring them in to your garage or cellar at night anytime temperatures dip below 3°C.
- For planted material, be sure to cover with a thick blanket or frost cloth.
- Keep an eye on the forecast and when in doubt, cover up your plants!
Purchasing early will ensure the best selection and if you take a few minutes to protect your plants when frost threatens, you will be rewarded with an early crop!
